Holywood Pilates was established in 2010 by
Dr Lorraine Maxwell (DPhil) who has 20 years clinical Physiotherapy experience as well as being a fully certified Pilates instructor through the Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute (APPI). 

MAT PILATES

POST NATAL CLASSES

We have a full range of mat Pilates classes from Beginners/Improvers, Intermediate through to Advanced level.

Classes run for 55mins.

1:1 Mat Pilates sessions are also available.

 

Post-natal Pilates classes are tailored specifically for safely returning to exercise after pregnancy. It is suitable for those 6 weeks post normal delivery or 12 weeks post c-section. Babies are welcome.

The Healthy Bones Pilates classes are undertaken predominantly in sitting and standing. It is ideal for those with Osteoarthritis who find it difficult to get on/off the floor, or those with Osteoporosis or at risk of developing it. 

 

Our Chartered Physiotherapists have a wealth of experience in treating musculoskeletal conditions including back and neck pain, osteoarthritic conditions and sports injuries. 

We are recognised providers for the main health insurance companies (BUPA, Aviva, AXA PPP, Vitality etc.).

ANTENATAL CLASSES

Antenatal classes are suitable for anyone in their 2nd or 3rd trimesters and allow exercises to be tailored specifically for this population. 

BARRE

TAI CHI

Barre classes are high energy and dynamic - integrating Pilates, dance, cardio and strength training.

We also run a Sassy Sixties Barre class - shorter and slower paced than our normal Barre class but still a full body workout!

Tai Chi consists of slow controlled movements practised in a sequence known as a form. It has positive effects on the mind and body - it can improve co-ordination, posture, balance, flexibility and strength.

GOLFERS

Golfers Pilates runs at 11.45am on a Tuesday morning and 11.30am on a Thursday. It is great for improving upper back/shoulder flexibility and hip and core strength.

YOGA 

New class addition at Holywood Pilates. This traditional form of Yoga comprises asanas (Yoga Postures) and pranayama (breathing exercises) which help bring peace to the mind & body.

These sturdy hatha classes are led at a comfortable and mindful pace with focus on alignment and breath awareness. 

 

ABOUT HOLYWOOD PILATES

Holywood Pilates & Physiotherapy Clinic was established in 2010 by Dr Lorraine Maxwell (DPhil) who has 20 years clinical physiotherapy experience as well as being a fully certified Pilates instructor through the Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute (APPI). We moved to our current premises in April 2019.

 

We run physiotherapy led modified Pilates classes and offer 1:1 Pilates, musculoskeletal physiotherapy and postnatal checks. There are currently 5 Chartered Physiotherapists working in the team.

WHAT IS PILATES?

Pilates is a mind body conditioning exercise program that targets the deep postural muscles of the abdomen and spine to improve overall central core stability and posture.

 

Pilates suits all ages and fitness levels and is particularly beneficial for those with back pain, poor posture, neurological conditions, sports injuries, arthritis, and before and after pregnancy. It is also great for injury prevention or for those who simply want to tone and strengthen their bodies.

 

Holywood Pilates practices modified Pilates exercises as taught by the APPI - the original 34 Pilates matwork exercises have been modified to incorporate the recent research on lumbar instability, muscle imbalance and adverse neural tension.

Lorraine qualified as a physiotherapist in 1998 and obtained her PhD studying paediatric orthopaedics in 2004. Over the last 20 years she has worked in a wide range of paediatric and adult musculo-skeletal areas both in Belfast and in London...
